Essex Hickory Golf Association
The Essex Hickory Golf Association was formed to give myself and a small group of Essex based hickory enthusiasts an official title.
When we play with clubs from the 1920's / 1930's (and dress in clothes from the same era) we tend to raise a few eyebrows as you can imagine!
We play three away days during the summer months, in April, June & August ,with The Essex Hickory Open as our end of season finale in October.
We feel that some of the artistry in shotmaking has been lost with such rapid advancements in ball & club technology over the past few decades.
Following the success of the inaugural Essex Hickory Open, where 30+ golfers competed at Five Lakes Golf Club near Colchester. The majority of the field were trying their hand at hickory golf for the first time in perfect weather conditions.
It was decided immediately after the event that we should share the joy of playing with clubs that are often described as "a work of art", "truly unique", "if only these clubs could tell their tales" and my personal favourite "I putted better with this old putter than I do with my own £200 putter!".
So we wholeheartedly invite members of the clubs that we visit on our away days, to come and join us. We have 40+ sets of genuine hickory shafted clubs (and balls that are suitable for hickory play) that we hire to the members. We charge £15.00 per player for a midweek event and £20.00 per player for a weekend event. This covers club hire, ball hire and we even throw in a few prizes too!
I have a wealth of experience of staging a Hickory Golf Day, as I have owned and operated www.hickorygolfdays.co.uk since 2013. I travel with my collection of hickory clubs to golf clubs up & down the country for Captain's Days, Centenary Celebrations and never to be forgotten Corporate Days.
We feel that while it's great to look at hickory shafted clubs in glass display cabinets, but it is even better to get out on the course and play with them.
It's not as difficult as people imagine and after two or three holes most people get the hang of it (to the degree where some people can get totally addicted!)
BE WARNED: Hickory golfers smile when we hit a good shot and laugh when we hit a bad shot!
So if you feel you would like to immerse yourself into the world of brassies, spoons, mashie niblicks and jiggers please get in touch via the Contact Us page.
Membership is just £40 (which includes £80 worth of logo'd merchandise).
